Hello, dear readers! ๐ฟ๐
(❀^ฯ^)๏พ๏พ
I hope you are all doing well and taking good care of your health.
I wasn’t able to get a good night’s sleep last night because I experienced another episode of acid reflux. It was one of those uncomfortable nights when the burning sensation in my chest and throat made it difficult to lie down or relax. Instead of sleeping peacefully, I found myself awake for hours, trying to find a comfortable position.
Since I couldn’t sleep, I decided to chat with my friend. During our conversation, I told to my friend that I had been dealing with acid reflux throughout the night. After trying to stay calm and taking small sips of water, I eventually prepared a hot cup of peppermint with ginkgo biloba tea. Surprisingly, after drinking it, I gradually felt more comfortable, and the symptoms slowly settled down enough for me to finally rest.
This experience inspired me to write today’s blog because it reminded me that every person’s body can respond differently to foods, drinks, and herbal products.
What Is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows backward into the esophagus, the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. Normally, a small muscular valve called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) closes after food enters the stomach. If this valve becomes weak or relaxes at the wrong time, stomach acid can move upward, causing irritation.
Common Symptoms
- Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
- Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
- Regurgitation of stomach contents
- Sore throat
- Frequent burping
- Difficulty sleeping because symptoms worsen when lying down
- Chronic cough in some people
Nightime acid reflux can be especially uncomfortable because lying flat makes it easier for stomach acid to travel upward.
My Personal Experience
During last night’s attack, I noticed that the burning sensation continued for quite some time. I tried relaxing and sitting upright. Eventually, I made a warm cup of peppermint with ginkgo biloba tea.
After drinking it slowly, I personally felt relief as the discomfort gradually eased. I cannot say with certainty that the tea alone stopped the acid reflux because symptoms sometimes improve on their own, and changing posture or simply waiting can also help. Still, this was my own experience, and I wanted to share it honestly.
Why Doesn’t Peppermint Tea Work for Everyone?
This is an important question because many people have heard mixed opinions about peppermint tea.
The answer is simple:
Our bodies are different.
Peppermint contains natural compounds that can help relax muscles and may soothe stomach discomfort for some people. However, peppermint can also relax the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). When this happens, stomach acid may flow back into the esophagus more easily, making acid reflux worse for many people.
That is why doctors often advise people with frequent acid reflux or GERD to be cautious with peppermint products.
Why Did It Seem to Help Me?
There are several possible explanations, although no one can say for certain:
- My symptoms may have started improving naturally around the same time I drank the tea.
- Drinking a warm beverage may have helped me feel calmer and more relaxed.
- Sitting upright while slowly sipping the tea may have reduced the discomfort.
- My body may simply tolerate peppermint differently than someone else’s.
As for ginkgo biloba, it is more commonly used in studies related to circulation and cognitive function. It is not an established treatment for acid reflux, so it is not possible to conclude that it relieved my reflux symptoms.
This is why my experience should be viewed as a personal story rather than proof that peppermint or ginkgo biloba tea is an effective treatment for acid reflux.
Why Every Person Reacts Differently
Several factors influence how our bodies respond:
- Genetics
- Overall digestive health
- Foods eaten before symptoms started
- Amount of stomach acid
- Stress levels
- Body weight
- Other medical conditions
- Medications
- Individual sensitivity to herbs
Because of these differences, something that feels helpful for one person may make another person’s symptoms worse.
Tips for Managing Acid Reflux
If you experience acid reflux regularly, these habits may help:
- Eat smaller meals.
- Avoid lying down for at least 2–3 hours after eating.
- Limit fatty, spicy, or highly acidic foods if they trigger your symptoms.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated.
- Drink enough water throughout the day.
- Keep a food diary to identify your personal triggers.
- If symptoms happen often or become severe, consult your healthcare provider for proper evaluation and treatment.
Final Thoughts
Last night’s experience reminded me how uncomfortable acid reflux can be. Although I personally felt better after drinking a warm cup of peppermint with ginkgo biloba tea, I also understand that this may not be the right choice for everyone.
If peppermint seems to worsen your symptoms, it is best to avoid it. If it appears to help you, it is still wise to discuss it with your healthcare provider—especially if you have frequent acid reflux, GERD, or take medications, since herbal products such as ginkgo biloba can interact with some medicines.
Health is deeply personal, and what matters most is learning how your own body responds while making decisions based on both personal experience and reliable medical guidance.
